Big brother Do spent 8 days at the Riflemen\u2019s camp, Level II course. During the whole time, he had the chance to call home three times. Every call was carefully listened to by his sister, Patricija, right beside me.<\/p>\n
Yesterday, she suddenly appears in front of me.<\/p>\n
With a generous handful of coins:<\/p>\n
\u201cCan you change these for bigger ones?\u201d she asks.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are you going to buy?\u201d I ask, curious.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not buying anything. I\u2019m giving a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even more intrigued, I press:<\/p>\n
\u201cWho are you congratulating?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDominykas. For successfully spending time without us. Without candies. Without fishing. Without his own bed.<\/p>\n
And for eating food he doesn\u2019t like at home.<\/p>\n
And for not being afraid of lightning or thunder, and going into the forest.<\/p>\n
And for not crying when it was hard\u2014and not calling you.\u201d<\/p>\n
We exchange the coins for bigger bills.<\/p>\n
It comes to twenty.<\/p>\n
With a small bag of \u201cBon pari\u201d candies, wrapped in a handmade envelope, she greets her brother today.<\/p>\n
On the envelope it says:<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m so happy you\u2019re back where it\u2019s good. Buy something from the fisher\u2019s shop.\u201d<\/p>\n
My heart tightens for a few reasons.<\/p>\n
For the little ears that not only hear\u2014but feel.<\/p>\n
For the knowledge that home is wherever it\u2019s truly good.<\/p>\n
And most of all, for the fact that they love each other.<\/p>\n
That \u201csister-and-brother\u201d love in our house doesn\u2019t speak much.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s silent. It just jingles\u2014through coins received at the flea market and exchanged the day before.<\/p>\n
