Recently, I \u201cordered\u201d a Facebook ad\u2014without even understanding how I did it.<\/p>\n
My \u201corder\u201d cost me 83 EUR.
\n\u201cWell, thank you,\u201d I thought, \u201cbut I didn\u2019t actually want to buy anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
Turns out, there\u2019s a new social media trick\u2014right after the usual \u201cpost\u201d button, a second one pops up. Very similar, almost as if the first one didn\u2019t register.<\/p>\n
Your finger automatically taps again\u2014but this time, instead of \u201cpost,\u201d it says \u201cboost.\u201d<\/p>\n
Which means\u2014you\u2019ve just agreed to advertise. Not for a very small amount, either.<\/p>\n
About a month ago, while shopping in an online bookstore, I found not only the books I wanted in my cart\u2014but also a few extra items, supposedly \u201cmatching\u201d my order and clearly \u201cnecessary.\u201d<\/p>\n
My first thought: \u201cOh, these must be free bookmarks.\u201d<\/p>\n
But when I saw they didn\u2019t have zeros next to them\u2014I almost crouched down:<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat?!\u201d I thought.<\/p>\n
After removing those unexpected items from my cart, I paused for a moment\u2014maybe I had added them myself?<\/p>\n
Turns out\u2014no.
\nIt was just a polite reminder to buy more than just books.<\/p>\n
Because, obviously, you won\u2019t be happy with books alone.<\/p>\n
That candle that mysteriously climbed into your cart? It would definitely make any book more \u201cinteresting.\u201d Right?<\/p>\n
If you pause on something eye-catching on social media\u2014
\nbelieve me, you\u2019ll be living with it in your sight for a long time.<\/p>\n
It will follow you everywhere.<\/p>\n
And most likely, it will keep flashing in front of your eyes until it finally catches you in the mood to buy it.<\/p>\n
Even if you don\u2019t really need it.<\/p>\n
At some point, you were simply convinced that you do.<\/p>\n
And then\u2014into this whole \u201cbuy, buy, buy\u201d context\u2014suddenly, a dinosaur called \u201cV&V\u201d crawls out of its cave.<\/p>\n
Showing. Teasing. Appearing in your feed daily with clothes, shoes, handbags.<\/p>\n
And as a rule\u2014the thing that catches your eye? They don\u2019t have it.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat do you mean you don\u2019t have it?
\nThen order it!
\nMake it!
\nSew it!\u201d<\/p>\n
The dinosaur shakes its head in disapproval.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I\u2019ll buy it! I want it! I need it!\u201d<\/p>\n
The stubborn dinosaur apologizes\u2014but won\u2019t send it.
\nWon\u2019t order it.
\nWon\u2019t make it.<\/p>\n
It might put you on a waiting list\u2014one that moves only if someone returns something.<\/p>\n
Noble? Maybe. But the chances aren\u2019t always great.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can pay more,\u201d someone says to the dinosaur.<\/p>\n
But stubborn as an old goat\u2014it doesn\u2019t give in.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen why show it every day?\u201d<\/p>\n
And that\u2019s when the ancient dinosaur proves\u2014it can speak:<\/p>\n
To inspire.
\nTo show those who already own sold-out pieces how to combine them when inspiration runs low.
\nTo teach styling\u2014not only to those who were \u201cborn with it,\u201d but also to those who for years started their mornings with \u201cI have nothing to wear.\u201d
\nTo preserve the value of a limited-edition brand.
\nAnd to show deep respect to those who already own our pieces.<\/p>\n
The goal was never to dress everyone.
\nIt isn\u2019t.
\nAnd it never will be.<\/p>\n
In 15 years, we\u2019ve experienced everything.<\/p>\n
Doors slammed louder than necessary.
\nEye-rolls strong enough to feel.
\nNot-so-pretty messages.
\nAdvice \u201cnot to take ourselves too seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n
We can count.<\/p>\n
We know that if we let go of this stubbornness and produced every \u201cshortage,\u201d we could proudly show much prettier numbers in our profit line.<\/p>\n
Maybe we could even apply the multiplication table by two.<\/p>\n
But no.<\/p>\n
That dinosaur crawls back into its small cave.
\nScolded. Corrected.
\nA bit out of touch with modern commerce and its rules.<\/p>\n
But without promising to \u201cimprove.\u201d<\/p>\n
While everything around screams \u201cbuy!\u201d
\nAnd even builds your cart for you so you don\u2019t have to think\u2014
\nthe dinosaur remains an \u201cold goat\u201d\u2014<\/p>\n
not pushing, not chasing, not forcing anything on you.<\/p>\n
And today, from the outside, that often looks strange.<\/p>\n
Very strange.<\/p>\n
To some.<\/p>\n
But not to everyone.<\/p>\n
